Your burger choices just got a little slimmer, Edmonton.
The Relish Gourmet Burger location that opened on 124st last summer has closed its doors. John Wallace, the owner of that location, cites major cost overruns in the construction phase – more than double what was anticipated – as setting them off on the wrong foot from the get-go.
According to Wallace, their sales were growing but ultimately the high rent and low weeknight sales, coupled with the high start-up costs, were just too much to overcome.
Some of those anticipated evening sales got detoured when the Roxy theatre next door went up in flames a few months before Relish opened. Wallace says he was counting on the evening traffic that the beloved theatre would bring to the neighbourhood in the evenings. He doesn’t blame the landlord or the Relish franchise though and puts the blame squarely himself “as it is all on me for poor due diligence”.
You may not have seen the last of Relish in Edmonton though, as Wallace says, the 124st location is up for sale and he’s investigating the possibility of opening a smaller location, as he still believes strongly in the product and would like to see it grow.
