Before I really stopped to think about specific places, I had it in my mind that my home neighbourhood of Oliver was full of great patios. It turns out that there’s a lot less great ones here than I first thought, but one I find myself frequenting regularly is Beer Revolution.
The Experience
This patio is a large L shaped one, with an abundance of patio heaters and a mixture of picnic tables and both high and low tables. I found all the seating to be quite comfortable, and the patio heaters here are no joke. At times I would even say I’ve been too hot with them on, which makes the Beer Revolution patio a great choice for chilly evenings or later in the patio season. If that weather turns wet however, you’d be wise to scurry inside, as the small umbrellas don’t provide much by way of rain protection.
It’s a pretty good atmosphere for conversation at Beer Revolution too, as the music emanating from inside is louder near the doors, allowing for the option of a quieter spot further away. I’ve never found it particularly obtrusive even near the doors either, but then I’m half-deaf anyways, or at least according to Robyn (whenever she asks me to do something around the house). The music helps to drown out the inevitable road noise on the side flanking 104 avenue but that traffic noise can be reduced by moving to the other section also, where you may unfortunately be assaulted with a nasty odour from the neighbouring McDonald’s instead if the wind is blowing to the west.
I guess nothing is perfect. Personally, I prefer the picnic tables on the south leg of the patio, in spite of traffic.
Beverages and Bites
Beer Revolution, as you might expect, is all about the beer. They’ve got a great little series of beer boards that read like an arrival/departure screen at the airport, villainously tempting you to order another, then another, and another, until you’ve sampled all the damn beers and can’t remember how you got there or where you live.
They should name those boards Wicked. After a few pints you feel like Defying Gravity, but you’ll be ever so Popular. Oh lord, I’m quoting Broadway musicals now- what has my life come to?
Stupid beer.
Anyways, the selection changes up regularly, and there’s almost always something on special. Also, the boards break down the beers into type, brewer, serving size, alcohol content, and where it’s from. You’re not left wanting for information here.
As for beer-less ways to whet your whistle, they’ve got a half dozen red wines, and the same in white. There’s also a dozen or so cocktails ($7-$10) too, so it is possible to have something other than beer here.
When it comes to food, I’m not going to sit here and tell you Beer Revolution is a destination dining spot for me, but the grub I’ve had has been ok for the most part. There is one aspect of the food that really stands out for me though….
The Specials.
In particular, the $2 pretzel special on Tuesdays evenings. We’ll often stroll over after 6pm on Tuesdays and partake in a $4.99 Peach Fuzz ale and a couple pretzels with remoulade dip. I’m not going to lie here, last time it was more like 3 beers and 4 pretzels each, but who’s counting? Every night of the week has a different special (wing night Mondays, cheap pizza Sundays, etc), but pretzels and beer are just a perfect match for me.
The menu boasts sausages, burgers, and other pub fare, and once I tire of the pretzels I’ll probably try them. Until then, see you at pretzel Tuesday!

No Raspberry Ale on the beer list? Raspberry Ale is the crack of the beer world. I apparently need to live where I can get this stuff year round 🙂
